唐天宝元年（742年），以儋州改名（1）。领义伦、昌化、感恩、富罗四县。州治义伦县，治所即今海南省儋县西北中和镇。辖境相当今海南省儋县（和庆、兰洋、南丰地区除外）、白沙县、昌江县、东方县和临高县东英、波莲以西地区（2）。乾元元年（758年），复为儋州（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?儋州：“隋儋耳郡。武德五年置儋州，领义伦、昌化、感恩、富罗四县。贞观元年分昌化置普安。天宝元年改为昌化郡，乾元元年复为儋州。”义伦县：“本汉儋耳郡城，即此县，隋为义伦县，州所治也。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1762页）。
