唐天宝元年（742年）以新州改名（1）。领新兴、永顺二县。郡治新兴县，治所即今广东省新兴县。辖境相当今广东省新兴县和云浮县大云雾山、茶洞以东地区（2）。乾元元年（758年）复改为新州（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?新州：“隋信安郡之新兴县。武德四年，平萧铣置新州。天宝元年，改为新兴郡。乾元元年，复为新州。”新兴县：“汉临允县，属合浦郡。晋置新宁郡，梁置新州。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1718页）。
《唐书》卷43上?地理7：“新州新兴郡，本新昌郡，武德四年以端州之新兴置。县二：新兴，武德四年析置索卢、新昌、单碟、永顺四县，后省新昌、单碟，乾元后又省索卢。永顺。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1098页）。
