唐武德四年（621年）置（1）。领端溪、安遂、乐城、都城等县。州治端溪县，治所即今广东省德庆县。辖境相当今广东省德庆县和郁南县西部地区境域（2）。武德九年（626年）废入端州（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?康州：“隋信安郡之端溪县。武德四年，置康州都督端、康、封、新、宋、泷等州。九年，废都督府及康州。贞观元年，又置南康州。十一年废。十二年又置康州。天宝元年，改为晋康郡。乾元元年，复为康州。旧领县四：端溪，汉县，属苍梧郡。晋于县分置晋康郡。隋废郡，并入信安郡。武德复置康州；晋康，隋安遂县。至德二年，改为晋康县；悦城，隋乐城县。武德五年属端州，又割属康州，改为悦城。都城，汉端溪县。”端州：“隋信安郡。武德元年（按据康州条下，当为武德四年之误），置端州，领高要、乐城、铜陵、平兴、博林五县。其年，以乐城属康州，铜陵属春州。七年，置清泰县。贞观十三年，省博林、清泰二县。天宝元年，为高要郡。乾元元年，复为端州。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1716页）。
