唐武德五年（622年）置（1）。领四会、化蒙、新招、化穆、化注五县。州治四会县，治所即今广东省四会县。辖境相当今广东省四会县和广宁县境域（2）。贞观元年（627年），省新招、化注二县，以废威州之怀集、废齐州之洊安二县来属，境域扩大（3）。贞观八年（634年），改名浈州（4）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?广州中都督府?四会：“汉县，属南海。武德五年，于县治北置南绥州，领四会、化蒙、新招、化穆、化注五县。贞观元年，省新招、化注二县，以废威州之怀集、废齐州之洊安二县来属。八年，改为浈州。十三年，省州及化穆县，以四会、化蒙、怀集、洊安四县属广州也。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1713页）。
