唐天宝元年（742年），以封州改名（1）。领封川、开建二县。郡治封川县，治所即今广东省封开县封川镇。辖境相当今广东省开建县（2）。乾元元年（758年），更名封州（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?封州：“隋苍梧郡之封川县。武德四年，平萧铣，置封州。天宝元年，改为临封郡。乾元元年，复为封州。旧领县四。天宝领县二：封川，州所治。汉广信县地，属苍梧郡。梁置梁信郡。隋平陈，改为成州，又改为封州。隋末，州废为封川县，属苍梧郡。武德初，置封州。隋移州于封川口，即今县治也。开建，汉封阳县地，属苍梧郡，隋旧也。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1719页）。
