唐武德四年（621年）置（1）。领桂阳、阳山、连山三县。州治桂阳县，治所即今广东省连县。境域相当今广东省连县、连山县、连南县、阳山县（2）。天宝元年（742年），改为连山郡（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷40?江南西道?地理三?连州：“隋熙平郡。武德四年，平萧铣，置连州。天宝元年，改为连山郡。乾元元年，复为连州。旧领县三。”桂阳县：“汉县，属桂阳郡，今州理也。随开皇十年，于县置连州，大业改为熙平郡，武德四年复为连州，皆以桂阳为理所。”阳山县。连山县。（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1619页）。
《元和郡县图志》卷29?连州：隋开皇十年置连州，大业初改为熙平郡，武德四年复为连州，管县三：桂阳、阳山、连山。桂阳县：“郭下。本汉旧县，属桂阳郡。吴、宋、齐并属始兴郡，梁、陈属阳山郡，隋属连州。”阳山县：“后汉省，晋重置，在洭水南。梁天监六年置阳山郡，以县属之。隋开皇十年属连州。神龙二年，移于洭水北，即今县理也。”连山县：“自汉至齐为桂阳郡之地。梁武帝分桂阳置广惠县，隋开皇十年改为广泽，属连州，仁寿元年改为连山。”（北京，中华书局，1983年，下册，711-712页）。
