唐乾元元年（758年）以海康郡改名，属岭南道（1）。领海康、遂溪、徐闻三县。州治海康县，治所即今广东省海康县。辖境相当今广东遂溪县、海康县、徐闻县和湛江市五里山港以西地区及东山岛境域以及广西北海市涠洲岛（1）。五代梁开平三年（909年），移州治海康县于南兴镇（3）。

（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?雷州：“隋合浦郡之海康县。武德四年平萧铣，置南合州，领海康、隋康、铁杷、椹川四县。贞观元年改为东合州。二年改隋康为徐闻县。八年改东合州为雷州。天宝元年改为海康郡。乾元元年复为雷州也。”领海康、遂溪、徐闻三县。（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1759页）。

《明史》45?地理六?广东?雷州府?遂溪县：“西南有涠洲巡检司，治海岛中博里村，后迁蚕村。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1144页）。《嘉庆一统志》卷451?雷州府?关隘?湛川巡司：“旧有涠洲巡司，亦至元时置，在（遂溪）县西南二百里海岛中博里村，今废。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，169册）。则涠洲在元也当属雷州府。
（3），《太平寰宇记》卷169?雷州?海康县：“隋废（南合）州，置海康县。朱梁开平三年，曾移州于惊雷江源，至刘氏伪命日，却归海康。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，30册）。
宣统元年《广东地舆全图》海康县图：海康县东南有惊雷水。其源头有南兴市。（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》第108号）。今据此作朱梁开平三年，迁州县治于广东省海康县南兴市。南汉乾亨元年迁还故址。",
