宋熙宁六年（1073年），改万安州为万安军，废陵水县为镇入万宁县，属广南西路（1）。军治万宁县，治所即今海南省万宁县。元丰三年（1080年）复置陵水县。辖境相当今海南省万宁县（万泉河流域除外），通什市（毛道地区除外），陵水县，以及保宁县毛感、三道以北地区（2）。大观三年（1109年）割琼州乐会县来属，辖境扩大。绍兴六年（1136年）废军为县，改属琼州（3）。

（1），《宋史》卷90?地理六?广南西路?万安军：“旧万安州，万安郡。熙宁七年，废为军。绍兴六年，废军为万宁县，以军事兼知县事，隶琼州。十三年，复为军。县二：万宁，后复名万安；陵水，熙宁七年为镇，元丰三年复，绍兴六年隶琼州，十三年复来隶。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2246页）。
按：《舆地纪胜》据《会要》作熙宁六年废为万安军，与昌化军、朱崖军同年。从之。
