宋庆历八年（1048年），以恩州改名（1）。州治阳江县，治所即今广东省阳江市。辖境相当今广东省阳江市、恩平县、阳西县境域（2）。熙宁六年（1073年），废春州，并铜陵县入阳春县来属，境域扩大。元至元十三年（1276年）改为南恩路（3）。

（1），《宋史》卷90?地理六?广南东路?南恩州：“旧恩州。开宝五年，废恩平，杜陵二县。庆历八年，以河北路有恩州，逎加南字。县二：阳江。阳春：熙宁六年废春州，并铜陵县入阳春来隶。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2238页）。
（2），据所领县治故址并参考宣统元年《广东舆地全图》，辖境相当今广东省阳江市、恩平县、阳西县境域。
