北宋开宝八年（975年）平南唐置江南路。治升州（今江苏南京市）（1），领升州、宣州、歙州、池州、饶州、信州、平南军、洪州、江州、虔州、吉州、袁州、抚州、筠州、建武军（2）。太平兴国元年（976年）分为东、西路（3）。
