元元贞元年（1295）升沅州置。⑴治卢阳县（今湖南芷江侗族自治县驻地芷江镇）。辖境包括靖州。延祐四年（1317）再次升靖州为靖州路，辖境缩小。其后辖境屡有变化，但治所未变。元至正二十七年（1367）朱元璋改为沅州府。⑵
⑴《元史·成宗传》：元贞元年六月，“升沅州为路，以靖州隶之。”（北京，中华书局，2册，394页）
⑵《明史》卷44《地理五》：“沅州，元沅州路，直隶湖广行省。太祖甲辰年为府。九年四月降为州，以州治卢阳县省入，来属（辰州府）。”（中华书局1974年点校本，4册，第1093页）",
