元至元十四年（1277年）改建昌军置，治南城县（今江西南城县）。领南城、新城、广昌、南丰县。元至元十九年（1282年），升南丰县为州，直隶行省，（1）辖境缩小。元至正二十二年（1362年）改为建昌府。（2）
注：
（1）《元史》卷62《江西等处行中书省》建昌路：宋为建昌军，“元至元十四年（1277年），改建昌路总管府。”治南城县。领南城、新城、广昌县。又南丰州下曰：宋隶建昌军。“元至元十九年（1282年），升为州，直隶行省。”（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1514页）按：元至元十九年前，南丰县当属建昌路。
（2）《明史》卷43《地理志四·江西》建昌府：“元建昌路，属江西行省。太祖壬寅年（元至正二十二年,即公元1362年）正月为肇庆府，寻为建昌府。”治南城县。（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1060页）《明实录》（一）《明太祖实录》卷10：壬寅（乙卯，“改抚州路为临川府，建昌路为肇庆府，未几皆复其旧。”（台湾，中央研究院历史语言研究所校印,125页)而李贤等撰《大明一统志》卷53《江西·建昌府·建置沿革》“肇庆府”作“肇昌府”，（西安，三秦出版社，1990年，832页）与之异。按：据《明太祖实录》，乙卯月建昌路改为肇庆府，又复为建昌府。则肇庆府或肇昌府存在时间不足一月，故图上不见。",
