南朝梁普通六年（525）分宣城郡置南陵郡。领县五：南陵、石城、临城、定陵、故冶。治南陵县。①陈因之。②隋开皇九年（589年）平陈，郡废，石城、临城、定陵、故冶四县并废入南陵县，南陵县属宣州。③
①《隋书》卷31《地理志下》：宣城郡：“南陵县，梁置，并置南陵郡。陈置北江州。平陈，州郡并废，并所管石城、临城、定陵、故治、南陵五县入焉。”（第3册，877页）故治，中华书局标点本《校勘记》：“按《寰宇记》一0五，南陵县‘自齐梁之代，为梅根冶，以烹铜钱。’此处‘故治’疑当作‘故冶。’”（899页）洪齮孙《补梁疆域志》卷1南陵郡领南陵、石城、临城、定陵、故冶（疑当作冶。宋齐二志俱无，当是梁立）。(《二十五史补编》第4册,4381页)《太平寰宇记》卷105池州贵池县：“南陵故城在县西南一十二里。按《舆地志》：南陵县有旧地置戍，即普通六年置南陵郡城也。隋平陈废。”（光绪金陵书局本）
