东晋义熙九年（413），晋陵郡迁治晋陵县（今江苏常州市区）。⑴辖晋陵、延陵、无锡、南沙、曲阿、暨阳6县。属扬州。南朝宋元嘉八年（431）改隶南徐州。⑵梁天监元年（502），曲阿县、延陵县往属兰陵郡，⑶晋陵郡辖境缩小。天监六年（507）南沙县往属信义郡，辖境再次缩小。隋开皇九年（589）平陈，郡废(4)。

唐·魏徵：《隋书》卷31《地理下》：“延陵，旧置南徐州、南东海郡，梁改曰兰陵郡，陈又改为东海郡。开皇九年州郡并废，又废丹徒县入焉。”（北京，中华书局，1973年汪绍楹等校点本，3册，874页）据此，延陵县当在置兰陵郡时，与曲阿县一并改属兰陵郡。
