隋大业元年（605年）改吴州为越州，治会稽县（今浙江绍兴市），领会稽、句章、剡、诸暨四县（1）。辖境相当明、清绍兴府、宁波府，但象山县（2）、萧山县北部（3）尚未划入。大业三年（607年）改为会稽郡（4）。
注：
（1）（4）《隋书》卷31《地理志下》：会稽郡“梁置东扬州，陈初省，寻复。平陈，改曰吴州。置总管府。大业初府废，置越州。”会稽“旧置会稽郡。平陈，郡废，及废山阴、永兴、上虞、始宁四县入。大业初置郡。”句章“平陈，并余姚、鄮、鄞、三县入。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，878页。）又领有剡、诸暨县。《元和郡县图志》卷26《江南道二》：越州“隋平陈，改东扬州为吴州，大业元年改为越州。”（北京，中华书局，1983年，下册，618页。）

（3）据乾隆40年修、道光28年重刊《海宁州志》卷1《疆界》载，乾隆56年勘定海宁、萧山南北分界，以龛、赭二山中流离绍塘十里为界。（《中国方地志从书》华中地方591号，成文出版社有限公司，1册，132页。）则当时赭山以北属海宁，龛山以南属萧山。",
