北宁太平兴国元年（976年）置淮南西路（1）。治寿州（今安徽凤台县），领寿州、庐州、蕲州、和州、舒州、濠州、光州、黄州。三年（978年），以庐州巢县无为镇置无为军（2）。至道三年（997年）与淮南东路合并为淮南路（3）。
