南朝宋元嘉十六年（439年）分荆州等地置。治临湘（今湖南长沙市）。（1）领有长沙、衡阳、桂阳、零陵、营阳、湘东、邵陵、巴陵等郡。（2）二十九年（452年）又省。（3）
注：
（1）《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史下曰：“晋怀帝永嘉元年（307年），分荆州之长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、营阳（《晋志》作穆帝置，见营阳郡考）、建昌，江州之桂阳八郡立，治临湘（今湖南长沙市）。成帝咸和三年省。……宋武帝永初三年（422年）又立。文帝元嘉八年（431年）又省。十六年（439年）又立。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1129页）故作仍分荆州等地置。
（2）《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史：领有长沙、衡阳、桂阳、零陵、营阳、湘东、邵陵等郡。又曰：“元嘉十六年立巴陵郡属湘州，后度郢。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1129——1132页）按：郢州刺史下曰：“孝武孝建元年（452年），分荆州之江夏……，湘州之巴陵……立郢州。”（4册，1124页）当在孝建元年巴陵郡改属郢州。
（3）《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史下曰：晋怀帝永嘉元年（307年），分荆州、江州等`地置，“成帝咸和三年省。（文帝元嘉）十六年又立，二十九年（452年）又省。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1129页）按：当作又省入荆州等地。",
