南朝梁承圣元年（552年）分衡州始兴等郡置。（1）治始兴（今广东韶关市）。领有始兴、安远二郡。（2）天嘉元年（560年）增领庐阳郡。陈太建五年（573年）废入衡州。（3）

（1）《陈书》卷9《欧阳頠传》：“梁元帝承制以始兴郡为东衡州。”而卷3《世祖纪》天嘉元年（560年）五月：“分衡州之始兴、安远二郡，置东衡州。”又卷5《宣帝纪》太建十三年（581年）：“夏四月乙巳，分而衡州始兴郡为东衡州，衡州为西衡州。”（北京，中华书局，1972年，1册158、50、98页）按：“梁元帝承制”，在承圣元年（552年），故作此年分始兴郡另置东衡州。
