南朝梁大宝元年（550）以武陵郡等地置。（1）治武陵（今湖南常德市）。领有武陵、南阳、夜郎等郡。（2）陈永定元年（557年）增领药山郡。太建七年（575年）改为沅州。（3）

（1）《宋本太平寰宇记》卷118《江南西道十八》朗州：“《舆地志》云：梁太清四年（550年），湘东王承制于荆州，割武陵郡置武州。”（北京，中华书局，2000年，219页）按：据《梁书》卷5《元帝纪》“大宝元年（550），世祖犹称太清四年。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，1册，114页）当作大宝元年（550）分武陵郡另置武州。而《陈书》卷三《世祖纪》天嘉元年（560年）三月：“甲子，分荆州之天门、义阳、南平，郢州之武陵四郡，置武州。”（北京，中华书局，1972年，1册，88页）
（2）清洪齮孙《补梁疆域志》卷三《沅州》：“梁置武州，昂后改曰沅州。”治临沅（武陵郡治，即今湖北武汉市武昌）。领有武陵、南阳、夜郎郡。（《二十五史补编》北京，中华书局，1956年，4册，4411页）按：当作武州也治武陵（今湖南常德市）。领有武陵、夜郎等郡。
