南朝宋孝建元年（454年）分荆州、湘州、江州等部分地置。治江夏（今湖北武汉市武昌）。领有江夏、武陵、巴陵、天门等郡。（1）二年（455年）巴陵郡增领绥安县。梁承圣元年（552年）又分巴陵郡另属巴州。（2）
注：
（1）《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?郢州》郢州刺史：“孝武孝建元年（454年），分荆州之江夏、竟陵、随、武陵、天门，湘州之巴陵，江州之武昌，豫州之西阳，又以南郡之州陵、监利二县度属巴陵，立郢州。”治江夏（今湖北武汉市武昌）。（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1124页）按：郢州当领有江夏、武陵、巴陵、天门等郡。
（2）《宋本太平寰宇记》卷113《江南西道十一》岳州：“元帝都荆，别立巴州，领巴陵郡。”（北京，中华书局，2000年，289页）据《梁书》卷5《元帝纪》“承圣元年（552年），世祖即皇帝位于江陵（荆州治）。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，1册，131页）故作承圣元年分巴陵郡属巴州。按：其后郢州仍存，因其辖地不属本区范围，故不予表示。",
