东晋永和八年（352年）徙置。治江陵（今湖北江陵县）。（1）领有南郡、武陵、天门、长沙、衡阳、湘东、零陵、邵陵、营阳、始兴、桂阳等郡。（2）太元二年（377年）又徙治上明（今湖北松滋县北老城）。（3）
注：
（1）《太平寰宇记》卷146《山南东道五》荆州：桓元子“以永和元年（345年）督荆州，镇夏口（今湖北武汉市武昌城北部）。八年（352年）还江陵，始营城府。”又曰：“此后尝以江陵为州理。”（金陵书局，光绪八年本，26册，2页）
（2）《晋书》卷15《地理志下》：荆州领有江夏、南郡、襄阳、南阳、新城、魏兴、上庸、建平、宜都、南平、武陵、天门、长沙、衡阳、湘东、零陵、邵陵、桂阳、武昌、安成等郡国，太康中增领顺阳（本南乡）、义阳郡。又曰：“惠帝分桂阳、武昌、安成三郡立江州，以新城、魏兴、上庸三郡属梁州。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，2册，454——458页）当武昌、桂阳、安成三郡另属江州。又《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史下曰：“晋怀帝永嘉元年（307年），分荆州之长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、营阳（因《晋志》无，姑作当时无此郡，见营阳郡考）、建昌（335年废，见《建昌郡考》），江州之桂阳八郡立，治临湘。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1118、117页）按：当荆州长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵等郡另属湘州。又见《荆州》（328年——328年）《注》（1），湘州之长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、建昌郡还归荆州。《晋书》卷15《地理志下》荆州：“穆帝时，又分零陵立营阳郡。……，又以广州之临贺、始兴、始安三郡及江州之桂阳，益州之巴东，合五郡来属。”（2册，458页）“穆帝时”，故作永和元年（345年）。则当时荆州应领有江夏、南郡、襄阳、南阳、建平、宜都、南平、武陵、天门、长沙、衡阳、湘东、零陵、邵陵、顺阳（本南乡）、义阳、营阳、临贺、始兴、始安、桂阳等郡。
（3）《晋书》卷74《桓冲传》：荆州刺史桓冲既到江陵，“于是移镇上明”。（北京，中华书局，1974年，6册，1950页）据《资治通鉴》卷104《晋纪二十六》太元二年（377年）七月：荆州刺史桓冲“奏自江陵徙镇上明”。（北京，中华书局，1956年，7册，3283页）按：当作太元二年从江陵徙治上明（今湖北松滋县北老城）。",
