东晋咸和四年（329年）徙置，治巴陵（今湖南岳阳县）。（1）领有南郡、武陵、天门、长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、建昌等郡。（2）五年（330年）迁治武昌（今湖北鄂州市）。（3）

（2）《晋书》卷15《地理志下》：荆州领有江夏、南郡、襄阳、南阳、新城、魏兴、上庸、建平、宜都、南平、武陵、天门、长沙、衡阳、湘东、零陵、邵陵、桂阳、武昌、安成等郡国，太康中增领顺阳（本南乡）、义阳郡。扬州下又曰：“惠帝元康元年（291年），有司奏，荆、扬二州疆土广远，统理尤难，于是割扬州之豫章、鄱阳、庐陵、临川、南康、建安、晋安，荆州之武昌、桂阳、安成，合十郡，因江水之名而置江州。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，2册，454——458、462——463页）当武昌、桂阳、安成三郡另属江州。《宋书》卷37《州郡志三?湘州》湘州刺史下又曰：“晋怀帝永嘉元年（307年），分荆州之长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、营阳（因《晋志》无，姑作当时无此郡，见营阳郡考）、建昌，江州之桂阳八郡立，治临湘。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1129页）按：当荆州长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵等郡另属湘州。又见《荆州》（328年——328年）《注》（1），湘州之长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、建昌郡还归荆州，则当时荆州应领有南郡、武陵、天门、长沙、衡阳、湘东、邵陵、零陵、建昌等郡。
