北宋太平兴国四年（979年）置，（1）治潭州（今湖南长沙市）。领有潭州、衡州、道州、永州、郴州、邵州、全州、桂阳监等地。（2）雍熙二年（985年）与荆湖北路合为荆湖路。（3）
注:
（1）张家驹《宋代分路考》二《至道以前诸路沿革》甲《太平兴国四年二十一路》荆湖南路：太平兴国四年（979年）置，据《长编》曰：“荆湖南路转运使言，‘十洞首领杨蕴求内附’”。故知其时实分南北也。（《禹贡》半月刊，1935年，第四卷第1期，34页）
（2）《元丰九域志》卷6《荆湖路》：南路治潭州（今湖南长沙市）。领有潭州、衡州、道州、永州、郴州、邵州、全州、桂阳监等地。（北京，中华书局，1984年，上册，258——265页）《宋史》卷88《地理志四?荆湖南路》所载同。（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2198——2201页）
