民国《竹林八圩志》卷5《金石》引清《康熙重修竹林庙桥记碑》：“余家竹林，先人咸以文章名世。”据1982年嘉兴市地名普查领导小组办公室所编《浙江省嘉兴市地名志》（内部发行）：竹林（镇）宋代名笃竹里，元代为东周里，明代名竹林里，清代称竹林庙，解放后称竹林（镇）。1980年版《浙江省地图册》有竹林，在嘉兴市东南，即此。",
