嘉庆《清一统志》卷103《太仓州一·关隘》：“高桥镇在宝山县东南四十里清浦港之尾，南接松江府上海县界，北至海，西濒吴淞江。”
王文楚《上海大陆地区城镇的形成与发展》引明万历《嘉定县志》清浦镇一名高桥镇。
《国榷》卷6十一嘉靖三十三年闰十一月，“川兵游击曹克新追倭嘉定之高桥”，可知高桥之称已见于明嘉靖中，参考明万历《嘉定县志》所载，镇大致形成于明嘉靖至万历中。清雍正二年置宝山县后，划归宝山县。
