嘉庆《清一统志》卷103《太仓州一·关隘》：“外冈镇在嘉定县西十二里，为水陆要冲。”
明崇祯《外冈志》卷1《沿革》：“神宗初年，民渐稠密，俗称富庶。四方之巨贾富驵，贸易花、布者，皆集于此，遂称雄镇焉。”可见外冈镇成于嘉靖、万历之际。今上海市嘉定区西外冈。",
