《元丰九域志》卷6江宁府句容县：“常宁、东阳、下蜀三镇。”
《景定建康志》卷16《镇市》：“常宁镇，在句容县东南五十里。”《至正金陵新志》卷4上《镇市》同。明弘治《句容县志》卷1《镇》：“常宁镇，在县治东南四十里茅山乡崇禧宫西，又有北镇，相去十里许。”清乾隆《句容县志》卷1《市镇》同。
按嘉庆《清一统志》卷74《江宁府二·关隘》作“长安镇”，引《元丰九域志》亦作“长安”，乃“常宁”之误无疑。据弘治《句容县志》卷一《坊镇》载，应在北镇附近。光绪《江苏全省舆图》句容县：“北镇在城东南四十里”，所记里距与上引诸志所载常宁镇去县里距同。据1978年版《江苏省地图集》，在今江苏省句容县东南长城，在北镇西北约十里，或是。
