嘉庆《清一统志》卷74《江宁府二·关隘》：“湖熟镇，在上元县东南六十里。”
按《元丰九域志》卷6江宁府上元县：“淳化、土桥、湖熟、石步四镇”，则湖熟镇始置于北宋熙宁、元丰年间。又《景定建康志》卷10六《镇市》：“湖熟市，在上元县丹阳乡，去城六十里。”《至正金陵新志》卷4上《镇市》同，则南宋时降为市，元仍为市。明万历五年《应天府志》卷10六《建置志》：“湖熟镇，在丹阳乡。”万历二十一年《上元县志》卷4《建置志》同，则迟至明万历以前的嘉靖、隆庆年间复升市为镇，又嘉靖十三年《南畿志》卷4上元县无此镇，则应在嘉靖末或隆庆年间。康熙《上元县志》卷7《镇市》、清尹继善等修、黄之隽纂：乾隆《江南通志》卷25《关津》、清嘉庆《江宁府志》卷12《建置志》并载有此镇，是沿袭至嘉庆时期未改。
