唐贞观十年（636年）迁置。治房陵县，（1）即今湖北省房县。（2）领有房陵、永清、竹山、上庸县。（3）天宝元年（742年）改为房陵郡。（4）

（3）《旧唐书》卷39《地理志二•山南东道》房州：“武德元年，改为迁州，领光迁、永清，又置受阳、淅川、房陵，凡领五县。其年，又于竹山县置房州，领竹山、上庸，又置武陵，凡领三县。五年，废迁州之淅川。七年，又废房陵、受阳二县。贞观十年，废迁州，自竹山移房州治于废州城。其年，省武陵县。改光迁为房陵县。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1546、1547页）按：当时房州应领房陵、永清、竹山、上庸县。
